supporting chanter in aion
(1) What is a chanters role as a full-support?
Full support means you are constantly buffing with Word of Inspiration, Word of Protection, casting Word of Revival and Recovery Spells to create a healing buffer shield which helps minimize damage as it comes in and completely backs up the cleric. Casting Magic Recovery every 5 minutes to replenish mana for your party members is much appreciated by your group. Given that, you are popping potions all the time and need buffing foods to help replenish your mana recovery rate.
Knowing your party's abilities and skills is key and adjusting mantras to boost or compensate helps. Invincibility Mantra and Hit Mantra (if at right level) always on for everyone. And then depending on the make-up for the group it will vary whether i use clement, victory, crit, magic, shield, etc. During certain fights if I know an nasty AoE elemental attack is coming, I toggle off the third mantra and put on protection mantra and then back on. There is usually a slight delay of 2-4 seconds so you have a small window with four mantra spread. ^-^
Always watch your chanter buffs and make sure everyone has blessing of stone, etc. Always watch your tank's and your cleric's health. Your priority is to keep them alive. If your tank is alive and maintains agro then your cleric is safer. And I tend to go on the safe side and cast HoTs on the cleric because, the tank can still lose agro or massive mobs are spawned. Fortunately clerics have lots of shielding/block spells to buy you some time.
Listen to your group ahead of time and ask questions proactively such as when they prefer WoW or WoQ cast. Try to be as pro-active with group as opposed to the re-active chanter. We do have amazing re-active skills but the CD times are long.
(2) Are they able to play like a support cleric?
There are a number of instances where a chanter can serve as the sole healer. However, chanters cannot dispel statuses of others. Why we can't as a priest class, no idea. But if no cleric is avialable spamming your HoTs is key since we have no instant heals/dispels for others or massive group heals like clerics do; and naturally make sure you distance yourself from danger.
If a cleric is in your group, I always distance myself from she or he just in case something targets them which means I can HoT and heal the cleric from a distance without my concentration/skills being disrupted and contribute to DPS if I can.
(3) Parry or Block? and Which other manastones?
HP for survivability and Crit Strike to knock down enemies, and for some equipment even healing boost can work great (limited see below). Some chanters don't bother with healing boost at all, but for PvE armor with healing boost stats, the differences can be very beneficial. See below in future section.
Parry is great if you have a full parry set and you are fighting along side with the tank and have a strong cleric. Many clerics nowadays are completely engulfed in their DPS Chain and bored with healing tree. So again know your situation and who you are paired up with and adjust as needed.
Attack/Crit or Crit/HP for PvE is fine.
(4) How do you boost healing?
Any PvE armor set with Healing boost stats is a plus! It makes the chanter's HoTs overwhelmingly powerful and every tank and cleric will appreciate you even more. It takes an incredible work load off the cleric, especially if they are DPS-happy.
The Power of Healing Boost Stats for Chanters:
Although clerics are the main healers, chanters are often very valuable and needed for back up heals for instances for very tough boss fights. There are also many clerics who are 'tired' of being heal specialized and have switched over to DPS chains completely. Whatever situation you may be in, Healing Boost Stats will often work wonders for a chanter in PvE, since we are buffing and casting HoTs to help fill in those gaps where clerical instant heals don't land on time or don't fill in those gaps. For PvP, Healing Boost Stats are not your primary concern and they are other great threads with suggestions on gear stacking with magic resist, crit strike, parry, etc out there.
Unlike clerics, sadly chanters have no passive healing boost skills or active skills stigmas that boost our healing. We have to rely on armor, titles, Victory Pledge Buff (auto-grouping), manastones or on a cleric skills like Noble Grace (which should really be a chanter stigma...since it is a buff) to boost our healing capacity. In some cases, if geared right, chanters can solo heal in some instances, so this thread may be useful to you.
Many believed that a healing boost +3 manastone = 3hp or even a simple base %. Nothing is quite that simple in Aion. It seems to be a % of the specific spell itself.
For example, Recovery Spell II is normally 854hp plus 854hp/2sec for 6 seconds for a total of 3416hp of healing over time.
Let's say you have a healing boost stat of 100, if you cast Recovery Spell 2 the result would be a % of the the base healing multipled by the HB stat plus base heal. In otherwords: (.854 x 100) + 854 = 939hp HoT
Healing Light 5 (level 9) is 1152hp heal. with a 100 HB stat:
(1.152 x 100) + 1152= 1267
Word of Revival 4 (level 9) is 82hp/2sec for 38 seconds. with HB stat of 100
(.082 x 100) plus 82 = 90hp/2sec for 38 seconds
Word of Life 4 is 425hp/2 sec for 10 seconds. with HB stat of 100
(.425 x 100) plus 425 = 468hp/2 sec for 10 seconds
Healing Burst 2 (healing slug =-/ 3 second heal) is 3327hp. with HB stat of 100:
(3.327 x 100) + 3327= 3660hp healed
Hopefully you see the pattern. Although these numbers may seem small or insginficant, but collectively when you stack your HoTs and party members are also using HoT potions, etc. the collective difference helps keep people up longer and does make a nice difference. These small differences can buy yourself, your cleric or other party members time to recover as their other skills are cooling down.
Healing Boost stats do not affect Healing Conduit at all (which is only useful in rare situations, i.e. single boss fight with a lot of DoTs and melee class benefits if in 5m range).
I ran EC the other night and the group had Victory Pledge Buff (+25 attack, +125 magic boost, +680 hp, and +50 healing boost) for the instance. When i switched to full heals and adjusted gear with stronger HB stats for healing (268), Recovery Spell 2 was landing on the tank and cleric (always heal those too first) for 1083hp HoT. WoL4 was 539hp HoT, HB2 4219hp heal, WoR4 104hp HoT, etc.
I also reduced the casting time for chanters slower heals like healing light (2 sec) and healing burst (3 second) using the EC PvP mace (8% cast speed) slotted with 5 healing boost +3 manastones and using the EC Deep Conditioning chain shield (+10 HB) slotted with 5 healing boost +3 manastones and used casting speed scrolls (+9%), etc. Some chanters i know also grabbed speed casting gloves or the PvP hanguards and slotted with HB +3s for boss fights for additional speed casting.
Just remember when you have increased your casting times, you will have to learn how to time your castings of Healing Light and Healing Burst to land at right time to be effective on your party members. If it looks like your heal may land to early, take a step back or forward (dance) to cancel the heal and recast.
So hopefully these tips may help if you want to find ways to be a stronger asset to your group if you have to move to full heals for tough boss fights where you cannot DPS at all, have a cleric who is DPS specific, cleric DCs (yikes), possibly solo healing or duo-healing with another chanter for some instances (Udas, Esso, Theo, Steel Rake, etc.). Remember duo-chanting can be quite effective since you can have four mantras running, while one is focused on healing and the other is DPS-ing and casting HoTs in between attack times.
FYI, currently my Recovery Spell 3 is almost a 1200hp HoT as a opposed to a 973hp HoT without HB stats.
When I know I am going to FULL heals for certain boss fights only, I switch to EC PvP mace with casting speed stacked with HB +3 manastones and the EC PvE shield conditioned with healing boost stats and stack with HB +3 manastones (almost a nice victory pledge buff) and switch to Guardian Protector Title (healing boost title) OR use a casting speed title with casting speed scrolls. Enchant your shield to reduce your physical.
Some clerics I have run with have slotted Noble Grace which increasing all healing in party by 50% for 15 seconds with a CD of 5 minutes. They have slotted this for some bosses who have healing debuffs (basically like a festering wound effect on party). If the cleric has that slotted then good communication between you and your cleric should happen so you can time your HoTs just right for maximum benefit.
(5) Is a full-support pve chanter a class other players appreciate? Or is it more like "meh, dps or support whatever."
Chanters are loved if you play your role that benefits your group. We have amazing buffs for HP/Defense, Magic Suppression, Elemntal Defense, Strike Resist, etc. We do have the strongest HoTs in the game. We can give a group Word of Wind and Word of Quickness and we can cast a shield spell on blocking attack and/or heal with HoT depending on your race.
A full-support chanter can help truly contribute to the success of your group in PvE and generally very much appreciated.
